Butter and Coffee. Yes, Together…

by katie on December 16, 2011 · 58 comments

My oldest brother, Sean, taught me many things growing up…

Like how to scarf down dinner and nose dive for the last slice of lasagna before its gone. How to weasel out of a headlock, and how to fight for the remote even if it meant breaking out the shrieks of death. Competitive much?

But on a more serious note, he has shown me how to be more fearless and an adventure seeker. Our short time together in Amsterdam was thrilling and exciting. He never pauses for a second and I love it.

.

So when he is home, which is rare these days as he’s lived in St Louis, Turkey, Spain, and countless other locations over the past few years, I know he’ll always be down for a thrilling adventure or willing to try out whatever new theory or idea I throw at him.

.

Take last night for example. I was lost deep in the woods of blogworld, you know when you come up for a breath of fresh air and its been oh three hours… and I stumbled upon this interesting website a guy put together all about his “Bulletproof” life. He eats this pretty radical diet, although not far off from the ever growing popular Paleo diet, and has these theories about how to basically be an unstoppable human being.

.

I was really digging it; nodding my head, mmhmm-ing out loud in agreement. Sean turned to me and finally asked me what I was possibly so engulfed in.

.

I summed up the entirety of the website and told him that tomorrow morning we were trying out this Bulletproof Coffee idea. He was obviously for it, as he usually is with all the crazy ideas I throw at him left and right.

.

Bulletproof coffee: basically high quality coffee, whipped in a blender with grass fed unsalted butter, and a MCT (medium chain triglyceride) oil- like a unrefined coconut oil. People claim it sustains them for hours and hours and they have boundless energy.

.

Butter? Coffee? Twist my arm.

Before you unsubscribe from my ludicrous blog, think about this: What is butter made from? Cream. What do most average people put in their morning cup of joe? Cream. Therefore this crazy idea isn’t too crazy afterall right? Go with it.

So the next morning, after another Crossfit session (love!), I brewed up some shade grown organic coffee for us.

I added about 3 heaping Tbsp of high quality unsalted butter. And whipped away for 30 seconds.

We don’t have any unrefined coconut oil on hand (only refined which I use on my body and scalp), so we stuck with just the butter.

The result was an incredibly rich, frothy, hot cup of coffee that smelled of toasted buttered bagels and tasted even better. It kept us both sated until much later in the afternoon, and Sean even knocked out a sprinting interval workout that I told him to try.

Then we made standing desks because I love seeing how many weird things I can get him to try in a day with me.

.

Now excuse me while I go inhale a pork chop and dive for the last sweet potato.

.

Have I gone crazy, would you ever give this a try? What’s your morning beverage of choice?

I love coffee and I love it really, really creamy…I love half and half (or french vanilla creamer). This is a new one to me…but I may consider on a whim one day :)

Saw your last recipe, the mousse/pie on tasteologie or FG when I was submitting last nite…congrats!

2 katie December 16, 2011 at 1:59 pm

Yes I always love my coffee with a bit of cream as well, although I can also drink it black in a pinch no problem. And thanks! I actually forgot to look back last night so thanks for letting me know.

3 Matt @ The Athlete's Plate December 16, 2011 at 8:20 am

Haha now this is interesting…

4 Lindsay @ biking before bed December 16, 2011 at 8:28 am

I don’t think you are crazy. You are just thinking outside the box:) I love reading about your relationship with your brother. He sounds a lot like my brother. My brother decided to skip Thanksgiving to go rock climbing in Kentucky.

5 katie December 16, 2011 at 2:00 pm

Yes totally something my brother would do too!

6 Alex@Spoonful of Sugar Free December 16, 2011 at 8:28 am

Wow, this is intriguing. It looks amazing and I must try it but……I love eating breakfast too much to totally skip the meal altogether!

7 Alex@Spoonful of Sugar Free December 16, 2011 at 8:29 am

And I love your new header, by the way! Looks great!

8 katie December 16, 2011 at 2:01 pm

Thanks Alex, still might be tweaking it but I think I like the look a bit better. Yes I did miss my usual eggs but it was fun to experiment with.

9 Gina @ Running to the Kitchen December 16, 2011 at 8:41 am

Interesting… I can see myself losing a couple of hours on that site. Bookmarked :)

10 Evan December 16, 2011 at 8:56 am

I would TOTALLY try this! Yum.

I feel like you and I are quite like-minded – standing desks are the best! At home, I balance mine on top of a giant hurricane candle holder (weirdo alert).

11 katie December 16, 2011 at 2:01 pm

Nice! not sure what a hurricane candle holder is but sounds sturdy enough for a standing desk haha.

12 Jenny December 16, 2011 at 9:08 am

you are going to make some man very very happy one day. Sweet potato pancakes fried in bacon fat with coffee soaked in butter every morning. What a life!

13 katie December 16, 2011 at 2:02 pm

Haha yes, for now I make my brothers more than happy with what I cook up for them. But hopefully someday ;)

14 Nora December 16, 2011 at 9:22 am

Thank you so much for posting this website! I’m definitely going to be spending some time on there today…

I also saw your post about Crossfit yesterday. I’m going to my first session tomorrow and I’m incredibly nervous/excited!

15 katie December 16, 2011 at 2:04 pm

ohh good luck it’s actually so fun. I went to my first actual class last night (the others were just one on one sessions to learn the basics) and it was fun and not as intimidating as I thought it would be. There are plentyyy of modifications and everyone was really supportive and friendly, hope you have a similar experience.

16 Jennie (the gf-gf) December 16, 2011 at 10:55 am

Actually, I can imagine that would be really good! For a while, I was in the habit of melting down a tablespoon of coconut oil into my morning coffee for an extra little something. I haven’t done it in a while, but it just made my coffee coconutty and rich, and I didn’t get hungry for breakfast for hours!

17 katie December 16, 2011 at 2:05 pm

I need to buy some coconutty coconut oil just for that reason alone :) refined coconut oil doesn’t have that wonderful taste.

18 Lauren December 16, 2011 at 11:20 am

Is decaf coffee and butter allowed? Because then I might try it. Your brother sounds like a blast to be around!

19 katie December 16, 2011 at 2:06 pm

I say go for it! The guy on the website goes on about how decaf coffee is bad for you but… if it works for you then I’d say why not. You may not get quite the same buzz but I’m sure it’ll be just as tasty.

20 Sally Anne @ PaleoRunnerGirl December 16, 2011 at 11:20 am

What a fascinating website! Thank you for sharing! I want to read more about it! It really would not be a hard adjustment from regular ole’ paleo eating. The butter coffee sounds SO crazy interesting. I need to try it! Also, you and your bro are ADORABLE! You seem like such buddies! I wish I had a brother!

21 katie December 16, 2011 at 2:07 pm

You would love the website, really cool info! Thanks, I am really close with all three of them, I’m lucky :)

22 lindsay December 16, 2011 at 11:38 am

i just did the same thing last night but with my vanilla coconut butter and hot tea. Now this i gotta try!

23 katie December 16, 2011 at 2:06 pm

ohhh my that sounds like a cup of heaven.

24 Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile December 16, 2011 at 1:47 pm

I have never heard such a thing but i’m very interested!! Lol

25 Katie @ Peace Love & Oats December 16, 2011 at 3:05 pm

i would try it if someone made it for me… but I’m not sure I’m at a place where I could put butter in my coffee. Lol I can’t remember the last time i had butter!

26 Tiff @ Love Sweat and Beers December 16, 2011 at 4:12 pm

Whaaa? That’s awesome! That wouldn’t be a recipe I’d read and try, but after seeing your pics and reading your description, I’m really intrigued.

27 Emilia December 16, 2011 at 5:33 pm

I saw the name of this post and I was intrigued immediately, I cannot wait to try this! Yes, it sounds quite crazy and a bit out there, but it seems just ridiculous enough to work.

28 katie December 16, 2011 at 6:44 pm

haha let me know if you like it. Remember to use UNsalted butter!!!

29 Kim @ Eat, Live, and Blog December 16, 2011 at 5:40 pm

Coffee and butter sounds great together! I would give it a try somedays. :)

30 Anna @ Food Fitness Frolicking December 16, 2011 at 6:08 pm

My first thought? Hmmm. Second thought? Possibly. The third time around? Yes. This sounds delicious.

Butter is great with everything. I mean, if it can make veggies taste like heaven, biscuits melt in your mouth, and whip together with sugar to make for a succulent frosting..then yes, it must be delicious with coffee.

31 katie December 16, 2011 at 6:44 pm

pretty much my exact thought process :)

32 carolyn murphy December 16, 2011 at 8:20 pm

Katie! You reminded me that Grampy used to stir a few scoops of vanilla ice cream into his coffee, – not exactly butter, but same idea! (And when doing so, he never failed to tell us the story of how Grammy almost did not agree to marry him when he proposed, because he stirred his coffee too fast and too loud!) You are right about the butter extending the morning energy, – when Cathy and Chris were young, I used to sneak a tablespoon of butter into their oatmeal on school mornings, -I had learned that it would extend their attention span by 1 hour. ( Sure wish the parents of my first graders could read your blog comments and take this hint!) See you soon! Auntie KK

33 katie December 16, 2011 at 9:07 pm

ahhh KK, That’s so funny about Gram and Gramp! And ice cream in coffee? Brilliant idea if you ask me. Can’t wait to see you Sunday!

34 Allison (Allison's Delicious LIfe) December 16, 2011 at 8:51 pm

HAHAHAH i love THIS and your blog. You are definitely not crazy—just crazy fun. That picture of your standing desks made me crack up because I can totally picture my own family doing this. I definitely want to give the buttered coffee a try. I think it sounds delicious, but not sure why it would give us any more energy or satiate us any more. Thoughts?

35 katie December 16, 2011 at 9:09 pm

haha thanks allison! About the butter- Just because adding the butter is adding fat and calories so your body has more energy to run off of. Fat is very satiating too, so it keeps you going a lot longer than if you were to just have black coffee for example.

36 greenhorn gourmande December 17, 2011 at 1:01 am

Glad to hear butter in your coffee is actually good! It’s a common practice in Ethiopia, although I believe they use a spiced butter. One of my good friends/ housemates is from Ethiopia and one day he told us about how his mom puts butter in his coffee. Needless to say a new ‘your mama’ joke was born that day. I’ve always been curious, but I generally take my coffee black so I never think to do it. Will definitely try and remember.

37 Becca December 17, 2011 at 9:20 am

Haha what a creative idea. Currently don’t have any butter… so might try this with full-fat coconut milk and the unrefined coconut oil :)

38 katie December 17, 2011 at 12:28 pm

Ohh I like the sounds of that a lot!

39 Amanda December 17, 2011 at 11:14 am

This is such an interesting and creative idea! My all time favorite is coffee with a touch of french vanilla creamer, but I might just have to give this a try sometime! :)

40 Yolie @ Practising Wellness December 17, 2011 at 2:46 pm

Oh my goodness, that sounds crazy – in a good way, lol! :-P I can see the reasoning, and I love and am inspired by people passionate about health and wellness adn living a full (bulletproof?) life! :-D Your brother sounds like a dude – and I love your photos, they are absolutely stunning! Isn’t Amsterdam awesome? I went there with my boyfriend and some of his mates during a road trip around Europe we did, and it was my favourite city of all! So much fun! I loved how everyone biked everywhere, and all the slanty houses, and the river running through it. Enjoy your time with your bro! <3 xyx

41 katie December 17, 2011 at 6:35 pm

I did love Amsterdam, the biking was awesome… very bike friendly city, although dangerous at times because everyone moves so fast around there!

42 Lou December 17, 2011 at 6:02 pm

Love it! Wonder if I could try a vegan version with coconut cream + oil? Hmmmm – would love to read about this guy, sounds fascinating. Love your standing desk on a milk crate – when I was a poor student we had a whole house’s worth of furniture fashioned out of milk crates – tables, a couch, you name it, if it was a milk crate – we had it!

43 katie December 17, 2011 at 6:36 pm

Another commenter mentioned trying it with both of those coconut products as well and I think it sounds dreamy! Let me know if you give it a whirl. So funny what college kids have to resort to sometimes… we used a big cooler as a coffee table up until a few weeks ago hah.

44 Natalie @ cinnamonbums December 17, 2011 at 6:16 pm

You guys are awesome. I’m actually really intrigued by this coffee and might try it. Also standing desks ftw. I wish I had a cool older brother like you do!

45 chelsey @ clean eating chelse December 17, 2011 at 9:24 pm

Okay that sounds awesome. Your brother sounds like a lot of fun!

46 Jennifer December 18, 2011 at 8:42 am

How the hell has your brother been able to live in Turkey and Spain? I want to talk to him stat b/c I am SO, SO jealous.

47 katie December 18, 2011 at 10:21 am

He was teaching English over there for a several months at a time. I know it’s hard to get a long term visa over there, but I’m not sure about all the details he went through.

48 Erika - The Teenage Taste December 18, 2011 at 12:15 pm

Normally I’m just a black coffee kind-of gal, but during the holidays I spike it with a dash of eggnog. Mmmmm…
Have a great weekend, Katie! :-D

49 Kelly @ Foodie Fiasco December 19, 2011 at 2:37 am

I literaly started clapping when I read this. Buttery coffee?

You. Are. A. GENIUS.

50 Janknitz January 16, 2012 at 11:49 pm

I decided to give this a try and YUM!

I experimented with some Kerrygold-it was salted and pretty good but the best was with my unsalted grass fed ghee. I whipped it up with a little cream with my whisk and put a few grains of sel Gris on top ( like a salted carmel). Delish!

Love butter in my coffee, been doing it for years, after hearing about it’s use in central Asia.
Told my son to try it, and then went on line to see if anyone else does it.
Found this blog.
I am a hunter so basically eat Paleo, i have a niece who is a crossfir fanatic in vancouver, and giver her some of my wild game every now and again…so anyway, butter in coffee is great.
