Life Behind the iPhone Lens

by katie on April 17, 2012 · 25 comments

I’ve spent the past 6 days fairly disconnected from my computer, the blog world, and media in general and it’s been wonderful to be so present.

The dis-connectivity, however, came to a screeching halt when I purchased myself an iphone4 on sunday evening. I’m determined to not be one of those people; face buried in a screen, constantly distracted, pulling up an app for anything that might be needed. But one thing I will be using it quite frequently for, is snapping photos on the go. The camera is great quality, and much more convenient to bring than my SLR.

So thanks to my new heightened level of connectivity, here is a glimpse of my lovely Monday through a new lens…

My brother and I went out to brunch at our favorite spot, The Friendly Toast in Portsmouth, NH.

I ordered the New Hampshire classic…

That’s goat cheese, bacon, asparagus, scallions and a lime avocado dip on the side. Brunch is the best invention. Go in starving. Eat the equivalent of two meals. Leave happy.

Then my very best friend made a surprise visit home for the day. We spent 2 hours catching each other up on everything before she had to head off for the night. It was too short and sweet, but a great surprise.

My Mom and I took our pup to my favorite place on earth for a stroll. First beach trip of many this year, now that I’ll be back on the coast for a while. Happy happy place.

After sitting in 2.5 hours of beach traffic to get the 7 miles home……… we really should have thought the going to the beach on an 80 degree holiday in April thing through a little more….. we stopped for some dinner supplies and assembled a gorgeous summer meal.

Un-pictured tomato, basil, and goat cheese salad. Asparagus, sweet potatoes, and lemon chicken. Summer flavors at their finest.

Or maybe that’s summer flavor at it’s finest. Grass fed cows make damn good ice cream.

How much do you use your phone and/ or computer? Do you feel like your too connected? When was the last time you took a good long break from it all?

when my arm broke April 2, my phone broke too :) Also, I have no personal computer, just a work-issued one and STILL I find that I am too connected :( nonetheless, everyone around me is “connected” so I’d like to participate and when they complain {like they did for the two years I went MIA from facebook} I just say “well you’ll have to write me some snail mail”

Yay, iPhone! You’re going to love it. Also, your dinner sounds so yummy – I really should wait to plan my dinners until after I read blogs :-)

oh my goodness i love the friendly toast! have only been to the cambridge location, but their huevos rancheros and homemade bread (anadama!) are bomb

11 katie April 17, 2012 at 10:10 pm

yes I remember you blogging about it i think! Its my absolute favorite breakfast spot to go when I’m home, the menu is just incredible. I’ve had the heuvos rancheros before too. And the decor inside is the second best thing next to their food.

Hi Katie! Oh-oh, now, I think I am the last family member who still has a “clamshell” phone. Lately, I hide it in my purse when opening it in public, – people stare! But do enjoy your iPhone, especially the camera! Thanks so much for Marine Graduation, all the Parts. Also, wanted you to know that your blogged healthy food choices are making an impression with the seniors set. I’m about to put our favorite Spinach Quiche in the oven (Gram’s recipe), but instead of spinach, I am substituting for the very first time…….. KALE! eeeks…. here’s hoping we’ll love this stuff as much as you do! ( Old folk need a lot of dark greens) Love to our family’s next graduate! Auntie KK

Let me know how the kale in the fritatta came out, hope you loved it as much as I do! And glad you enjoyed the pictures so much :) Some of my favorite photos I’ve ever taken because of how much they mean to me.

Tendercrop has coconut ice cream? Hey I was thinking of you today just bought some sauerkraut after reading about probiotics but Im not sure what to do with it. I threw it in a pan and its ok on its own but I want to cook it with something. Any ideas?

16 katie April 17, 2012 at 10:17 pm

it was ice cream from the cows on the farm, with lots of coconut. crunchy and summery, it was awesome. I’ll email you about the kraut sash!

My in laws have a house in northern AZ and there is no internet connectivity and my phone barely works. We try to go up there a few times a year, it is so nice. BUT enjoy your new phone :)

it must be great to have that time to focus on family and your surrounding without even the temptation!

The beach is the perfect place to take a break from it all. I love these pictures…and am totally jealous of your iPhone!

20 Leonor@FoodFaithFitness April 18, 2012 at 2:45 pm

I love my iPhone, but it can be a bit much at times. When we went on a cruise and didn’t have acces to the internet, Facebook, etc….it was so nice. You have to unplug every once in a while.

21 Claire April 19, 2012 at 5:28 pm

I had no idea tendercrop sold their own ice cream! Especially coconut ice cream…def going to go check that out next time I’m there…

22 katie April 19, 2012 at 8:40 pm

yes you must try the coconut- not much of a sweet tooth over here but that stuff is unreal. Are you from around there??

23 Claire April 19, 2012 at 10:34 pm

Yeah I’m from Hamilton, near Beverly and Ipswich. I’m currently in California for college though. I really enjoy your blog by the way, I’ve been reading for a while but commented for the 1st time today :)
